Matki Poha


Matki Poha is a famous street food available in Pune where Poha is enriched with the nutrition from matki and paneer to add a unique nutrition and amazing taste to the poha. I tried making this popular dish of Pune at home and following is the resultant:

Ingredients:

  • For Matki usal:
    • Matki- 250 gms
    • Potatoes- 1 1/2 medium
    • coconut (desiccated)- 2 tbsp
    • til- 1 tbsp
    • Jaggery- 2 tbsp
    • coriander - 1/2 cup
    • curry leaves- 8-10
    • turmeric powder - 1/4 powder
    • red chili powder- 1/2 tsp
    • mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
    • cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
    • goda masala - 1 tbsp
    • coriander powder - 2 tsp
    • tomatoes- 3 medium
    • hing- 1 generous pinch
    • salt- as per taste
    • ginger- 3/4 inches
    • lemon juice- 1/2 tsp
    • oil- 1 tbsp

  • For poha:
    • poha- 200 gms
    • water- to soak poha
    • oil- for tempering
    • cumin seeds- 1 tsp
    • mustard seeds- 1 tsp
    • lemon juice- of half medium lemon
    • sugar- 1 tbsp
    • salt- to taste
    • peanuts- 1/4 cup
    • coriander- 1/2 cup
    • curry leaves- 8-10
    • haldi powder- 1 pinch
    • green chili paste- 1 tbsp
  • For assembling:
    • sev- 1 tbsp
    • grated paneer- 1/4 cup
    • fresh coconut grated- 1/4 cup
    • matki usal
    • poha

Procedure:

1. To make matki usal, make a tomato puree. Blend tomatoes, curry leaves and ginger to fine paste. 





2. Heat oil. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves,hing , tomato puree. Cook for till the oil oozes out. 




3. Add til, coconut, red chili powder, haldi powder, goda masala. Add water and let it cook for 2 minutes.



4. Add matki and water. Bring it to boil.




5. As soon as matki cooks, add boiled potatoes, jaggery , lemon juice and salt. Matki usal is ready.




B: To make poha:
1. Wash poha with water and strain the water.


2. Add sugar to it. Add salt to it. Add lemon juice to it. Add green chili paste to it.Mix well. Leave aside.


 3. Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves to it. Add haldi powder to it. Add peanuts to it.







4. As the peanuts get cooked, add poha mixture and mix gently.


5. Let it cook for 5 minutes to ensure proper blending of flavors.





C: For assembling:

Take poha in a bowl. Add pour matki usal over it. Garnish with grated paneer, coconut and coriander.
Your delicious matki poha is ready to serve. Serve hot and enjoy.
